I know that this thread hasn't been replied to for some time but I'm replying anyways - just in case anyone is interested.
What the people of today don't realise is what preceded the 60s. No, not just the 50s doh. Here in the UK, rationing caused by World War II didn't end until 1953. In the 50s people doffed their caps to the bosses. People knew their place and stayed in it. Social mobility was zilch. OK, it still isn't great but back then it didn't exist at all. People retired at 65 and died within a couple of years. 50s music needs criminalising - but that's just my opinion. When people sang, it looked as though they had a broomstick stuck up their butts. The guys all wore suits and ties and the women dresses.
When we got to the mid-60s, all that changed. No longer were bands called 'THE This', 'THE that' and 'THE other'. They were called such names as 'Traffic' and 'Procol Harum'. The music was fresh, it said something. It wasn't just about boy meets girl. It was about protest (Vietnam, the bomb). Society was attempting to divest itself of the shackles of the 50s. OK, the 60s weren't perfect - but it beat the hell out of the 50s.
