On Money, Asteroids, Cats etc

On Money and Asteroids

Down in what used to be a meadow
are the lies that the politicians told and the money that the bankers lost.
On the hill, there’s a wind farm obscuring the view of Armageddon.
‘Where’s all the money gone?’ someone cried
as if it mattered,
as if it were really ever there.
It was just an illusion created by the usurers.
The people are broken anyway.
I tried to catch their thoughts in a recycled paper cup
but it was sold on ebay after their tears ran dry.
Somewhere, deep in space, an asteroid skips on its merry way to a rendezvous with Earth.
It needs to hurry,
time is running out for nature,
it ran out long ago for man.

What Social Mobility

‘Listen to teacher’ is what his dad said
And so on education he fed
And, in fact, he got such a thirst
That his teachers all thought that he’d get a First
Then, one day, he came home from school
His dad said ‘Son, you’re nobody’s fool’
‘You’ve done well at that school, of that there’s no doubt’
‘But now it’s time to stop messing about’
‘My mate’s a foreman and he needs a lad’
He’ll see you right, you’ll be just like your dad.
‘But dad’, he said ‘I’m not like thee’
‘I want to study and get a degree’
His dad just smiled and without a fuss
Said, ‘University son’s not for the likes of us’.

The Children’s Home (With apologies to Kate Bush)

Ooh, he ignores me
The man with the child in his eyes.
Now, he’s seeing me
The man with the child in his eyes.
Now, he’s teasing me
The man with the child in his eyes.
Ooh, he’s kind to me
The man with the child in his eyes.
Now, he’s touching me
The man with the child in his eyes.
And ooh, how he’s hurting me
The man with the child in his eyes.
And how, I hate dog collars
And men with a child in their eyes

You don't think you're over-reacting a little, Mondrian, do you? The world hasn't ended yet. Cheer up.

It's your use of the word 'YET' that I find intriguing. It has a certain je ne sais quoi about it, n'est pas?

Do you believe that the world will end soon?

Now who needs to cheer up?

Perhaps you should sit down and calmly write a poem about what, how and why you feel what you feel. Then, you can just let it all go and return to a place filled with peace and tranquility.

That said, should the system have let me post as a guest? :?: Haven't come across that before.

Yes, the board apparently does let you post as a "guest" - a bug that I thought had been fixed. Seems a great way of inviting spam.

Ah, it also asked me to enter the tool that's used to capture the Elusive Butterfly. That should prevent spam methinks.

As I recall, those nets were used in an ATTEMPT to capture the butterfly. Unsuccessful attempts, because the butterfly was... ummm... elusive. A bit like chasing a rainbow, as sung by The Seekers, or trying to catch the wind, as Donovan valiantly tried to do.

There's been some beautiful songs and lyrics written over the years - it has to be said. There's also some strange ones too. Desmond Dekker was a strange guy. Not many people know this but he suffered from a medical condition called spontaneous combustion - especially of his head. He was oft' heard singing 'Oh, oh, me ears are alight'. :D

and in the verse I always heard it as "You touch me on the bum, you sound your alarm."

... and there was a song by Elton John (forget which) where he sings about ' ... pissing in the stream'. Apologies mods and modsesses.

I also thought that you were gonna tell be about the Jimmi Hendrix's 'S'cuse me while I kiss this guy' line.

Then there's Kenny Rogers who, apparently, had ' ... 400 children and a crop in the field.'.

oh, don't get me started on mondegreens.

I believe the person responsible for one of my favourite mondegreens has actually been known to post on this board: "She's a muscular boy" (Herman's Hermits).
